20 Precious samples

Germany’s only manned research submersible JAGO helps scientists to collect samples at water depths of up to 400 metres. JAGO pilot Jürgen Schauer has conserved a branch of the cold-water coral Lophelia pertusa in seawater directly at the bottom of the Trondheim fjord for the marine biologists Janina Büscher and Dr. Armin Form. Well-preserved, the living sample is brought onboard research vessel POSEIDON and can be used for highly sensitive measurements of the anthozoa’s metabolism.

In this video portrait, BIOACID researcher Janina Büscher explains how she investigates the effects of climate change on Lophelia pertusa.
