In view of the growing concern about possible impacts of ocean acidification on marine life, a national initiative for a coordinated project (Verbundprojekt) entitled “Biological Impacts of Ocean ACIDification" (BIOACID) has been presented to the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). The BMBF encourages further development of this project.

The overarching questions of BIOACID will be:

  • What are the effects of ocean acidification on marine organisms and their habitats?
  • What are the underlying mechanisms of responses and adaptations on the level of populations and communities?
  • How are they modulated by other environmental stressors, and what are the consequences for marine ecosystems and ocean biogeochemical cycles?

The proposed project will be closely coordinated with the European Project on OCean Acidification (EPOCA) funded as part of the 7th EU Framework Programme.
